80 years ago, two cousins opened the doors of a small hardware store on Hwy 59 N with a simple dream: to serve their neighbors with quality supplies, trusted advice, and warm southern service. What started as a small storefront with basic hardware, plumbing, and electrical items quickly grew into a community staple. Today, the third generation of that same family is still behind the counter, and the store has grown into one of the best-stocked hardware and sporting goods stores in the area.
A lot has changed over the years. William Wingo bought out his cousin Leonard but kept the Campbell Hardware name. Nelson Wingo Sr. took over from his father and started expanding into sporting goods and outdoor recreation. His children brought in new brands, modern accessories, and added on-site gunsmith and archery services.
What hasn’t changed in 80 years is the reason people keep coming back: you’ll find the tools and gear you need, advice you can trust, and service that makes you feel like family.
1946
William Wingo Sr. and Leonard Campbell open the doors
Cousins William Wingo Sr. and Leonard Campbell opened Campbell Hardware on Hwy 59 N in Robertsdale, Alabama. The business began as a small storefront carrying basic hardware, plumbing, and electrical supplies as well as a water well drilling service.
1954
Expanding outdoors
In 1954, Campbell’s added a small selection of fishing and hunting supplies to the floor. This would be the first step in expanding the business to include sporting goods and outdoor gear.
1960s
Creating a family legacy
William Wingo Sr. bought out his cousin Leonard but chose to keep the Campbell Hardware name. The store continued to grow with help from his wife, Martha Wingo, who played an active role in the hardware/housewares department.
1974
The Second Generation
William’s son, Nelson Wingo Sr., took over Campbell’s in 1974. An avid outdoorsman, Nelson continued to expand the sporting goods department. His children also grew up in the store, continuing the tradition of offering great customer service with the same pride and devotion in the family business as their grandfather.
1980s-2000
Growth & Expansion
Over the next few decades, Campbell Hardware & Sporting Goods continued to grow with the Robertsdale community. What started as a small storefront expanded into over 12,000 square feet of basic and specialty hardware supplies, sporting goods, outdoor gear, apparel, accessories, and more.
2008
The Next Generation
Nelson’s three children grew up in the family store. In 2008, his daughter Ashley left her teaching career to join the business full-time, followed by his son, John Nelson Jr. The Wingo children brought in new brands, expanded departments, and added on-site technician services – the kind of personal help you won’t get in a big box store.
Today
Celebrating 80 years
80 years later, Campbell Hardware & Sporting Goods is still growing, still family-owned, and still rooted in the same values that built it. Campbell’s is now a full-service hardware store and sporting goods store with a wide product selection, a family-led team, and two full-time gunsmiths and archery technicians on staff.
